While We Wait
There are quite a few things waiting for us at home.
Rugs to be unrolled, light fittings we chose months ago that I still haven’t seen installed, vintage pieces we’ve collected, and things that have been gifted or handed down to us, all waiting for us to decide where they belong.
I can’t wait to get home and unpack it all. I keep imagining very ordinary things, like what the light will be like at different times of the day, what scent will our home have after a while.
So much of creating a home happens before you actually live in it. We’ve made countless decisions from photographs, measurements and samples. We’ve chosen pieces without really knowing exactly where they’ll end up.
There are still things I haven’t found at all. A new favourite set of teacups for one. I’ve always loved having tea with my parents, usually at their house, and I can’t wait for them to come over and have tea at ours.
I imagine slow weekend mornings and drinking coffee in bed, a morning walk, or making a fire when it’s cold and working from our couch.
Some evenings it will be just the two of us. Other nights will be spent with family and friends. Dim light, our favourite music playing and a pretty candle burning. I’m really looking forward to hosting and cooking for the people we love.
But while all of that is waiting for us, we’re here.
Lake Tahoe has become a really special part of our lives. For three months of the year, it somehow feels like a holiday and incredibly hard work at the same time.
We fall into a routine here that really suits us. We cook, organise, work hard, spend a lot of time outdoors and live simply. There are stretches when the house is full and busy, and then there are quieter periods when it’s just Murray and me.
I know I’ll miss that when we leave.
There’s something very grounding about this little season each year, and I don’t want to spend the final days of it wishing I were somewhere else just because I’m excited to go home.
I think you can be really looking forward to what comes next and still be grateful for where you are.
For now, there are still ideas to collect and things to imagine.
Soon enough, we’ll unpack the boxes, unroll the rugs and find homes for all the pieces we’ve collected. We’ll finally see what the afternoon light looks like through our windows.
Until then, I love daydreaming about all of it.
